Wingates Band

Brassband 1st division

Bio

Wingates Band is a “world famous” brass band based in Wingates, near the town of
Westhoughton. The Band was formed in 1873 by members of the local Independent
Methodist church’s Bible class. Reflecting this origin, the band was originally known
as the Wingates Temperance Band. Early in the 20th century Wingates rose to
become a member of the elite of brass bands having won the ‘Open’ seven times
and the ‘National’ on four occasions; including the first “double double” in history in
1906/7, only replicated once since. The band has also had success internationally
on tour and in winning the French Open in 2004 and 2006. At present the band is
still the 8th most successful brass band in history, and the current band will compete
in the first section for 2026. Wingates Brass Band are an innovative musical
ensemble with a contemporary outlook on brass band music, its recent mission is
surmised in three words: history, quality, innovation.
