The fanfare tradition
A brief history of fanfare orchestras
Fanfare orchestras originated in 19th-century Europe, particularly in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. They developed from military and civilian music ensembles and became an important part of local and regional musical life. Traditionally, fanfare orchestras played a central role in ceremonies, celebrations and public events, firmly rooted in their communities.
A defining feature of the fanfare orchestra is its instrumentation, consisting of brass instruments, saxophones and percussion. Unlike wind orchestras, fanfare orchestras do not include woodwinds such as flutes or clarinets. This unique combination results in a powerful and transparent sound, suitable for both indoor and outdoor performances.
At the World Music Contest, fanfare orchestras compete in multiple divisions, where musical quality, ensemble playing and artistic interpretation are key evaluation criteria. The competitions highlight the versatility of the fanfare tradition and its ongoing international development.
