Brass bands originated in 19th-century Great Britain during the Industrial Revolution. In mining and factory communities, brass ensembles were formed as a source of recreation, social cohesion and cultural development for workers. Supported by factory owners and local communities, these bands quickly grew in number and professionalism.

A defining characteristic of the brass band tradition is its fixed instrumentation, consisting exclusively of brass instruments and percussion. This standardized formation allowed bands to be fairly compared and laid the foundation for organized competitions. Over time, brass band contests developed into an important cultural phenomenon.

From Great Britain, the brass band tradition spread worldwide, with strong roots in Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia. Today, brass bands represent a vibrant musical genre in which tradition and innovation go hand in hand, playing a key role in international competitions such as the World Music Contest.
