Wind orchestra Sub Umbra just celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2024 and is now
ready to proudly present itself at the World Music Contest! Despite this rich history
Sub Umbra stands for boldness, innovation, and quality, constantly pushing the
boundaries of what a concert band can be. Led by Arjan Gaasbeek, a graduate in
orchestral conducting from the Conservatory of Groningen, the ensemble of around
70 musicians performs a wide-ranging repertoire, from big band and operetta to
musicals and ambitious competition pieces. Sub Umbra welcomes musicians of all
ages with a strong musical foundation who seek to grow, innovate, and bring out the
best in themselves and each other. Recently, the orchestra performed with young
marimba soloist Ties Janssen, winning a local solo competition that highlights young
talent. Following successful performances at the concert competitions in Zutphen in
2019 and 2023, both resulting in first prize and glowing jury feedback. Sub Umbra
now sets its sights on a new milestone: participation in the prestigious World Music
Contest (WMC). Be inspired by the energy, creativity, and craftsmanship of Sub
