Bio
Banda de Música de Zamora, successor to the historic provincial band founded in
1919, has undergone major changes. Formed in 1963 under Felipe Blanco Aguirre,
it later evolved into the Asociación Cultural "Banda de Música de Zamora" in 1996,
with José Ignacio Petit Matías becoming conductor in 2001, ushering in
international recognition. The band earned 4th prize at the 2002 Certamen de
Valencia, 3rd in Leganés (2003) and again in Valencia (2004). In 2005, it won gold
with honors and was crowned absolute champion in Ostrava (Czech Republic), and
took 2nd prize in Portugal. In 2008, it won 1st prize and overall champion in
Austria’s Mid Europe, plus 2nd in Switzerland. In 2010, it earned 2nd in France’s
"Coups de Vents," becoming virtual winner. It also placed 2nd in Portugal (2018)
and 3rd in Benavente (2019), where it also won Best Conductor. In 2022, it took 2nd
place again in Valencia. In 2024, the band won 1st place in the Certamen “Villa de
Olivares” and received awards for best performance, conductor, soloist, and the
audience prize. Strongly connected to local artists, the band organizes concerts
year-round, including the educational “Conciertos Divertidos” and the Hispano-Luso
Festival. It also remains central to Zamora’s Semana Santa.
