About the festival

The World Music Contest (WMC) in Kerkrade has been the most prestigious international festival for wind music since 1951, worldwide known as the “Olympic Games of Wind Music.” Every four years, WMC brings together more than 20,000 musicians and over 300,000 visitors from all continents. The festival promotes musical excellence, innovation, and cultural exchange, providing a unique stage where wind music in all its forms is celebrated.

The 75th anniversary edition in 2026 promises to be a celebration of both tradition and innovation. While honoring 75 years of rich history, WMC also looks to the future, focusing on the continued development of the international wind music sector.

History – 75 Years of Wind Music in the City of Sound

Kerkrade, located in the heart of South Limburg, has a special connection with wind music. From the discovery of coal in the 19th century, harmony and fanfare ensembles grew into the social and cultural backbone of the region. Wind music became an essential part of daily life.

During the post-World War II reconstruction period, the idea arose in Kerkrade to organize an international festival for wind music. In 1951, the first edition of the World Music Contest took place. Since then, WMC has developed into a leading festival with a significant role in the development of the international wind music sector.

At the 20th edition in 2026, WMC will celebrate its 75th anniversary in the “City of Sound,” Kerkrade: a milestone that brings together the past, present, and future of wind music.
