Bio

Spielmannszug Oberlichtenau e.V. (SZO) represents a decades-long marching
band tradition established in Oberlichtenau, a picturesque village approximately 30
kilometres from Dresden, the capital of Saxony, Germany. Founded in 1952, the
SZO has evolved from its traditional "Spielmannszug" origins into one of Germany's
most successful national and international music ensembles. The club's
commitment to musical excellence has earned recognition across federal borders.
Already during the former GDR era, the SZO established itself as one of the leading
marching bands, achieving numerous national competition podium placements—a
legacy of success that continues today. The SZO's flagship formation, the Marsch
& Drillkontingent, comprises 67 musicians who embody discipline, precision, and
fellowship as essential elements of their performance philosophy. Their striking
uniforms, inspired by the Royal Guard of Norway, perfectly complement their pursuit
of exactness and unique presentation. This elite formation represents the
embodiment of the club's musical and visual excellence. The SZO's international
acclaim peaked at the 2022 World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Netherlands, where
they secured a gold medal in the March Championship Division, achieving 5th place
globally. Additionally, drum major Daniel Mager earned recognition as both the best
drum major of the competition day and the overall World Championships.
